Dental Technician I
SUMMARY:
Performs technical procedures involved in the fabrication and repair of dental appliances according to dentist’s prescription. Assists students with case design, setting teeth and related techniques to create appliances that function well and have a good cosmetic result.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reads work authorizations and examines working casts and impressions to determine the type of dental appliance to be made or repaired. Scan for CAD/CAM restorations.
Instructs undergraduate and post-graduate students through personal demonstration. Techniques taught include those for: 1) removable prosthodontics such as setting of teeth, partial dentures, frame work designing, construction of custom trays, occlusal rims, wax patterns and other laboratory procedures; or, 2) fixed restorative techniques taught include waxing of single unit restoration, duralay coping, investing of patterns.
Ensures compliance with federal, state and university policies, including disease prevention and infection control.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or GED with 5 years’ experience in all areas of Prosthodontics or 3 years’ experience in all areas of Prosthodontics and a degree in Dental Technology.; two years in a combination of education, directly related experience and specialized training.
Required Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
Ability to independently perform specialized tasks following stated procedures. Skill in applying basic analytical skills to problems where clear precedent may not exist. Skill in organizing and executing multiple assignments under specific time constraints. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Working knowledge of computers.
Incumbents should possess either of the following KSAs:
- Thorough knowledge of dental porcelain systems and precious and non-precious metal systems. Knowledge of and skill in the use and maintenance of dental laboratory tools and equipment; or,
- Through knowledge of complete and partial denture system techniques and material. Knowledge of and skill in the use and maintenance of dental laboratory tools and equipment.
Shows interest and ability in working closely with students and taking initiative in producing a quality finished appliance.
