The Engineering Designer will provide supervision and direction to the Design and Drafting staff. The work will include developing, analyzing, and engineering solutions for various Public Works projects including traffic, transportation, parking, and other related issues. Examples of work include reviewing private development and subdivision submittals and drafting comments. This includes zoning, traffic, and Ordinances the Engineering Division enforces. This position is the staff liaison to the Board of Traffic & Parking, and will develop solutions and make presentations to the Board. This position also serves as the City representative to the Washington County Transportation Advisory Committee. The Engineering Designer receives traffic related requests from citizens and develops remedial measures when required, maintains a database of requests, develops and issues work orders, and coordinates with other City staff. The Engineering Designer will also attend Neighborhood First meetings when traffic-related issues are to be discussed. The Engineering Designer will act as a project manager for various capital projects as assigned, and will provide supervision, direction, and active participation with the Design/Drafting staff. This will include preparation of plans and specifications, bidding, and construction management of Capital Improvement Projects. The Engineering Designer reports to the Assistant City Engineer and may perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Formal training in Civil Engineering or related field with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering preferred. Experience demonstrating responsible charge of design and/or construction projects may be substituted for education. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the City’s vehicle operator’s policy.
Minimum of seven (7) years’ experience in civil engineering design and construction, including drainage and stormwater management, roadway and traffic system design, cost estimating, budgeting, AutoCAD, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), etc. Minimum four (4) years’ experience in a supervisory role of design personnel preferred.
